I wanted to bring up a concern that myself and my fellow coworkers have, which is our personal view and unrelated to official statements of our workplace.
My workplace just received the January 2018 issue of the Happi magazine, and my coworkers and I are a bit taken aback by the choice of cover image. As women in science, depiction of a woman with a good portion of her bra showing while she’s wearing a lab coat is offensive. Not only does it go against the safety reasoning for wearing a lab coat in the first place, it’s unprofessional. Sexualized images are the norm in social media, but to see it in an industry standard resource is off-putting. It demonstrates disrespect to the women in the field and doing research, undermining our place in the industry and how we are approached or considered.
Of course we don’t expect republication, what’s done is done; however, please be more conscientious about the portrayal of professional women going forward.

Yesterday, January 10, 2018, I was surprised to see the cover of the Happi magazine. The image on the cover of the Happi magazine was distasteful, inappropriate and misleading against the laboratory professionals in the industry.
As a scientist and professional with 17 years of experience in the lab setting, I can’t comprehend the need to use this kind of image to represent women in the lab. With everything that is going on in the USA, I would expect more caution in the selection of images, especially in a magazine intended for professionals in the personal care and household market. This image is sexist and so inappropriate that I can’t even belief that it is the cover of the Happi magazine.
I would like to read what was the rationale behind the selection of this cover.

I would like to take a minute of your time to express my displeasure with the cover image for the January 2018 issue of Happi magazine. I will not go into details about all the reasons why I am personally offended by this cover image. However, as a woman and a professional cosmetic R&D scientist I can tell you that there is never any excuse for undergarments to be on display while wearing a lab coat and working in a laboratory. I am very disappointed that Happi magazine chose such an image for the magazine cover to represent a female laboratory scientist at work.
