To help formulators meet the growing need for clean ingredients, Genomatica, San Diego, recently introduced the Brontide (1,3-butylene glycol) line of cosmetic and personal care ingredients. Brontide is derived from natural plant-based sugars in a safe, sustainable process, according to company executives. In contrast, traditional 1,3-butylene glycols are made from crude oil.
“Brontide is the functional equivalent of traditional 1,3-butylene glycols, but has some major benefits,” explained Damien Perriman, SVP-specialty chemicals, Genomatica. “Brontide has half the impurities of butylene glycols derived from petroleum and no heavy metals.”
Brontide may be Genomatica’s first foray into personal care, but the company produces an array of bio-based products for other markets. These chemicals enable better, more sustainable everyday products like food packaging, personal care products, auto parts, clothing, carpet and more.
In skin care and related formulas, butylene glycol keeps cosmetics from drying out and crystallizing, and stabilizes formulations as a whole. It acts as a humectant and emollient in a variety of personal care products. Butylene glycol has solvency and antimicrobial benefits, too.
Brontide performs all of those functions, but offers sustainability advantages and supply-chain transparency that marketers and consumers crave.
Genomatica produces Brontide in Europe and is producing enough material for cosmetic partners. To attract more customers, Genomatica is attending In-Cosmetics Global in April and NYSCC Suppliers’ Day in May.
