Unilever Ventures—the venture capital and private-equity arm of Happi International Top 30’s Unilever—has taken stakes in indie beauty brands Secret Alchemist and SkinInspired, according to reports. Both companies are based in India.
Clean fragrance brand Secret Alchemist has raised $3 million in a seed funding round that was led by Unilever Ventures, said reports, along with DSG Consumer Partners. The funding will be used to expand the brand’s portfolio and R&D capabilities. It was co-founded by entrepreneurs Samantha Rubin Prabku, Akash Valia and Anika Thadani.
Unilever Ventures also recently invested in SkinInspired alongside Lotus Herbals Pvt. Ltd. through its beauty and personal care investment arm, Lotus Innovation Fund and Spring Market Capital, said reports. FMCG veteran Piyush Jain founded the company in 2022 and has worked with Happi Top 50 company Procter & Gamble across skincare, personal care home care and more.
Unilever Ventures has locations in London and Mumbai. In 2019, it invested in influencer marketing platform CreatorIQ. The software system manages and optimizes creator-driven campaigns.
In 2023, it joined forces with True Beauty Ventures, a US-based investment firm, to help finance clean fragrance brand The 7 Virtues.
Straand, an Australian-based natural hair care start-up that emphasizes in scalp care, also inked a $2 million pre-seed investment deal in 2023 with Unilever Ventures. The company, which was founded in 2022 and is based in Melbourne, used the funds to expand into the US, UK, Europe and China.
In 2024, Unilever Ventures was part of the latest investment round at fast-growing microbiome body care brand Luna Daily. The investment came alongside follow-on investment from existing partners, Redrice Ventures and Joyance Partners as well as some angel investors.
