The SCC is offering a new hands-on lab experience on the formulation of emulsion foundations for Aug. 22 and 23 in Teaneck, NJ and Hackensack, NJ. Formulation and process personnel who develop and scale-up pigmented emulsions will gain insight into the physical and chemical properties that contribute to achieving a successful product, according to SCC.

Emulsion foundations are complex formulations, comprising at least three phases: water, oil and pigments. The course will cover theory of formation and stabilization of emulsions and pigment dispersions, then the application of theory to formulation of foundation emulsions. Attention will be given to requirements for physical stability, aesthetic acceptability and performance.

For the laboratory portion, the class will be divided into groups to prepare examples of the pigmented emulsion types covered in the lecture. Procedures and equipment will be lab versions suitable for scale up to manufacturing.

The instructors are Jane Hollenberg and Mark Chandler. The lecture portion will be held from 9am-5pm at the Glenpointe Marriott and the lab session will be held at Fairleigh Dickinson University from 9am-1 pm.

The costs are $550 for SCC members, $275 for student members and $675 for non-members before Aug. 8.
