It may not have the cache of, say, Black Friday, but savvy marketers will circle Dec. 17, 2012—Free Shipping Day—on their calendars.

Since overtaking Black Friday’s online sales in 2010, the founders of Free Shipping Day have their sights set on conquering Cyber Monday in 2012. For the first time in the event’s history, Free Shipping Day is scheduled on Monday, the busiest online shopping day of the week. Since its inception in 2008, the popular one-day event has been nipping at the well-priced heels of Cyber Monday’s record-breaking earnings, despite being scheduled on a Friday when online shopping is at its slowest.

Last year, Free Shipping Day (Dec. 16), generated over $1 billion in online sales, contributing to the 15% increase over last year’s total online earnings during the holidays. More than 2,500 retailers participated in Free Shipping Day, including Kohl’s, Macy’s, J.Crew, Lands’ End, Harry & David, Barnes & Noble and many more.
