The Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates (SOCMA) is now a member of two additional state chemical councils – the Chemical Industry Council of Illinois and the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council in a move to further expand its state-level advocacy work.

“State chemical councils offer SOCMA the opportunity to more efficiently address local industry priorities rather than placing organizational resources on the ground full time,” said SOCMA President & CEO Lawrence D. Sloan. “These councils have a lot of influence and are well-respected with state officials and elected representatives.”

In addition to the Illinois and Ohio groups, SOCMA is also a member of the Chemical Industry Council of California and the Pennsylvania Chemical Industry Council.

“SOCMA strategically joined these four groups because they are in the epicenter of legislative and regulatory activities that impacts our industry,” Sloan said. “We intend to turn our memberships into more of a reciprocal partnership in which we help them benefit from our national level expertise while we rely on them to help us tackle priorities at the state level.”

As specialty chemical manufacturing expands in the U.S., so do the number of priorities in which SOCMA needs to be involved.

“It is becoming increasingly important for the specialty chemical industry to deploy state-level advocacy, and as the association for this sector, SOCMA will be working with its state council partners to ensure this perspective is heard,” Sloan explained.
