SCC’s 2011 Scientific Seminar Heads to Vegas

June 2-3 event at the Bellagio is hosted by Area III.

The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) will hold its Annual Scientific Seminar on June 2-3 at the Bellagio Resort in Las Vegas. This event—the second Seminar to be hosted by the chapters in a specific Area, —is being hosted by Area III, which includes the California, Intermountain West and Southwest Chapters.


The Seminar’s Technical Program was arranged by the Committee on Scientific Affairs, which is chaired this year by Karl Lintner, Ph.D. (Kal’idees Beauty Ideas).

The Seminar will begin on Thursday morning with Session A–Skin, moderated by Howard Epstein, Ph.D. (EMD Chemicals). The session will open with the Henry Maso Keynote Award Lecture from Professor Reinhold Dauskardt (Stanford University). Professor Dauskardt will present “Biomechanics of the Barrier Function of Human Skin: Predicting Skin Damage and the Effects of Cosmetic Treatments”. Other featured papers include Paolo Marchesi (Soliance US Corporation) presenting “Arabinoxylo-oligosaccharides: A Lightening Active Ingredient with a New Mechanism of Action that Inhibits Melanogenesis Targeting Tyrosinase and TRP-1”; andDavid Boudier (Silab) presenting “Imaging Quantification and Cosmetic Applications”.

Session B–Hair on Thursday afternoon will be moderated by Joseph Dallal (International Specialty Products).This session will include presentations from Trefor Evans, Ph.D. (TRI-Princeton) entitled “Manipulating the Bulk Properties of Hair”; Michael Philbin, Ph.D. (AkzoNobel) entitled “Maltodextrin Based Styling Polymers”; Manual Gamez-Garcia, Ph.D. (BASF Care Chemicals) entitled “Hair Setting with Hot Irons and Heat Activation” ; and Carole Lepilleur (Lubrizol Advanced Materials) entitled“Novel Cationic Cassia Polymers as Effective Conditioning Deposition Aids”.

On Friday morning, Martha Tate, Ph.D. (Kimberly-Clark Corporation) will moderate Session C–Genomics.James V. Gruber, Ph.D. (Arch Personal Care Products) will present “Using Human Genomic Microarrays in Personal Care”. Other featured presentations include “The Role of Clock and SIRT-1 in Chromatin Remodeling: A New Code of Entry for DNA Repair in Human Skin” – Isabelle Imbert, Ph.D. (ISP Vincience); and “Global Metabolomics and Its Application in Product Development for Consumer Care” – John Ryals (Metabolon, Inc.).

Robert Bianchini, Ph.D. (Merck Consumer Care) will moderate the final session, Session D–Sun.Featured presentations will include “Evaluation of Photo-Toxic Effect of Fractionated Melanin: A Comparative Study Between Three Different Cell Lines” – Nava Dayan, Ph.D. (Lipo Chemicals, Inc.); “Stimulation of Skin Immunity and Langerhans Cells Protection Dramatically Reduces UV-Induced Skin Erythema and TEWL” – Giordio Dell’Acqua, Ph.D. (Induchem AG); “Complimentary in vitro Models to Investigate the Mode of Action of Active Ingredients on the Protection of Extracted Epidermal Stem Cells against Different Types of Stresses” – Sandy Dumont, Ph.D. (SEPPIC) and “Using Light Diffusion to Making Anti-Aging Claims” – Nick Morante (Nick Morante Consultants).

The Committee on Scientific Affairs has also arranged four Mini-Breakfast Seminars—two on Thursday and one on Friday mornings from 7:30 a.m. until 8:45 a.m.The informal nature of these mini-breakfasts allows the opportunity for give and take, questions and answers.COSA Mini-Breakfasts are limited to thirty participants.Scheduled topics include “Quantitative Measurement of Well Being” presented by Karl Lintner, Ph.D. (Kali’dees Beauty Ideas) and “cGMPs for Cosmetics” instructedby Joe Albanese (3V, Inc.) on Thursday morning and “How to do a Patent Search” presented by Tony O’Lenick (Siltech, LLC) on Friday morning.

The SCC’s Continuing Education Program will offer “Introduction to Cosmetic Formulations” instructed by Art Georgalas and “Advanced Hair Care” instructed by Dr. Robert Lochhead on Wednesday, June 1st. Space is limited and there are separate registration fees for the Mini-Breakfasts and the Education courses.

The Annual Scientific Seminar will once again feature the Student Poster Exhibit.D-D ChemCo will sponsor Awards for Best Student Posters.There will be first place ($800), second place ($600), third place ($400) and fourth place ($200) awards.The Student Poster Award Sponsored by D-D ChemCo will be judged by COSA members and presented at the Friday Business Luncheon on June 3.Students interested in presenting posters at this Seminar should contact the SCC National Office.

The Suppliers’ Cocktail Reception will be held on Thursday evening, June 2 at the Bellagio.

Registration fees will be $600 for members registering prior to and including May 6($650 after that date).Fees for non-members will be $720, prior to and including May 6($770 after that date).One-Day registration will be $500 (Thursday) and $400 (Friday) for members, $620 (Thursday) and $520 (Friday) for non-members prior to and including May 6. After the 6th, the fees will be $550 (Thursday) and $450 (Friday) for members and $670 (Thursday) and $570 (Friday) for non-members. There will be split registration fees for the Annual Seminar.

On-Site Registration fees will be higher for those individuals registering at the Seminar. Registration material will be sent to all SCC Members by early March and information will also be available on the SCC website.
