DuPont Tate & Lyle To Expand Bio-PDO Production

Plant expansion in Loudon, TN begins next month.

DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products, LLC has announced plans increase production of bio-based 1,3 propanediol (Bio-PDO) by 35% by expanding its facility in Loudon, TN. Construction is scheduled to start next month and will be finished by the second quarter of 2011.

Bio-PDO is used as an ingredient in materials in a variety of applications that have traditionally been based on petroleum—including cosmetics and personal care formulations as well as fluids and polymers. Dupont Tate & Lyle currently sells Bio-PDO under the Zemea and Susterra banners. The firmproduces it from corninstead of petroleum-based feedstock using a proprietary fermentationprocess.

“We are seeing strong demand for our renewable products,” said Steve Mirshak, president, DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products. “We had record sales last year and are already anticipating the need for additional capacity after just three years of operation. This expansion is proof thatcutting-edge industrial biotechnology can deliver products that meet theneeds of industry and consumers while contributing to a smallerenvironmental footprint.”
