Skin Care Is Resilient

A decline, yes, but not so deep, says NPD.

Forget the Lipstick Effect. During this pandemic-induced downturn, consumers are turning to lotions, creams and other formulas to lift their spirits. Skin care and hair care have been the most resilient among the prestige beauty categories during the COVID-19 period as consumers have prioritized these routines, according to new data from The NPD Group.

Here's a look at some select numbers from NPD. 

Prestige Beauty Sales by Country

  1. Germany: -21%
  2. Canada: -22%
  3. US:  -25%
  4. France: -30%
  5. Spain: -31%
  6. UK: -35%
  7. Italy: -36%
  8. Mexico: -47%
Prestige Skin Care Sales by Country
  1. Canada: -12%
  2. US: -14%
  3. Germany: -17%
  4. UK: -27%
  5. Spain: -29%
  6. France: -31%
  7. Italy: -32%
  8. Mexico: -38%
For the time period: US Canada, Mexico (January 5 to July 4); UK (December 29 to June 27); Italy, Spain, France, Germany (December 30 to June 28).
