FDA Commissioner Tweets About Cosmetics

In his weekend, “SundayTweetorial,” FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb provided an overview of the cosmetics industry and explained how these products are regulated.


“Cosmetic products are sold to consumers and used as part of daily beauty and cleansing routines. In today’s #FDA #SundayTweetorial, I’ll talk about FDA’s role in ensuring that these products are safe, properly labeled and free from harmful microorganisms or other contaminants,” said Gottlieb in his tweet.


He also tweeted that by working collaboratively with all stakeholders, the Agency can enhance its ability to provide consumers with greater assurance around the safety of the cosmetic products used in the US every day. In light of the recent controversy surrounding talc, Gottlieb noted that more needs to be done, tweeting:


“This could include: mandatory registration and listing, good manufacturing practice regulations, mandatory reporting of adverse events, access to records, mandatory recall, labeling of known cosmetic allergens, and ingredient review.”
