Amika, the Brooklyn-based, B Corp certified hair care brand, has partnered with 4Ocean to join the clean ocean movement as a certified cleanup partner.

Amika joins other top brands such as John Frieda, Mount Gay Rum, Bluecore and US Polo Assn.

The world has produced an estimated 18.3 trillion pounds of plastic since the 1950s; less than 10% of it has been recycled while 79% accumulates in the environment. Global plastic production is expected to triple by 2050, according to the World Economic Forum, which means an increase in the amount of plastic waste polluting the environment.

Together, the partnership will help clean over 100,000 pounds of plastic from oceans, rivers, and coastlines around the world.

“By partnering with 4ocean, we are amplifying our commitment to environmental responsibility,” said Chelsea Riggs, Amika CEO. “At amika, we believe in the power of community and collective action to drive positive change, and this partnership is a significant step in our journey to make a tangible impact and protect our planet’s most vital ecosystem.”

More Than An Environmental Issue

But plastic pollution isn’t just an environmental issue; it also threatens the global economy and global food security. Ocean-based industries like fishing and tourism employ billions of people; the blue economy also contributes several trillion dollars of goods and services to the global economy every year. More than 3 billion get their primary source of protein from seafood.

A recent winner of the Sustainability Excellence Award by CEW, Amika says it’s committed to fully integrating environmental social governance into the entirety of its business. The company accounts for all emissions, responsibly sources ingredients, optimizes packaging, plans to reach Net Zero by 2035 and builds strategic partnerships that align with its own mission.

4Ocean calls itself a “premier ocean cleanup company” dedicated to ending the ocean plastic crisis. Since 2017, its professional, full-time captains and crews have removed more than 29 million pounds of plastic waste and other man-made debris from the world’s oceans, rivers and coastlines.

4Ocean launched its corporate partnership program in 2022 to help forward-thinking brands transition to the circular economy—a regenerative economic system designed to minimize waste, maximize resource efficiency and promote sustainability by designing products, processes, and business models that make it possible for brands to use their resources in a continuous loop without degradation or loss of value.
