Coppertone is recalling five aerosol sunscreens sold by retailers nationwide after finding the cancer-causing chemical benzene in some batches of the products.  Consumers are advised to stop using the affected products, which were made between January 10, 2021, and June 15, 2021, Coppertone said in a notice posted by the Food and Drug Administration. Reports of benzene in sunscreens have been in the news for months. The November issue of Happi includes a detailed look at the benzene/sunscreen issue. After a difficult 2020 due to the pandemic, the sunscreen market rebounded in 2021 with sales up more than 20%, according to IRI.

The Coppertone recall involves 12 lots of Pure & Simple SPF 50, Pure & Simple Kinds SPF 50, Pure & Simply Baby SPF 50, Sport Mineral SPF 50, travel-size Coppertone and Sport Spray SPF 50.

The specific pecific products recalled are:

  • Coppertone Pure & Simple SPF 50 (5.0 oz) aerosol sunscreen spray
    • (Lot# TN00CJ4, Lot# TN00BR2)
  • Coppertone Pure & Simple Kids SPF 50 (5.0 oz) aerosol sunscreen spray
    • (Lot# TN00857, Lot# TN00CJV, Lot# TN00854, Lot# TN00855)
  • Coppertone Pure & Simple Baby SPF 50 (5.0 oz) aerosol sunscreen spray

    • (Lot# TN008KU, Lot# TN008KV)
  • Travel-size Coppertone Sport Spray SPF 50 (1.6 oz) aerosol sunscreen spray
    • (Lot# TN00BU3)

In a statement, parent company Beiersdorf noted, “daily exposure to benzene at the levels detected in these affected Coppertone aerosol sunscreen spray products would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences based on generally accepted exposure modeling by numerous regulatory agencies. Out of an abundance of caution, we are recalling certain lots of these specific aerosol sunscreen spray products.  To date, Coppertone has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall.”

Beiersdorf noted that the FDA and other medical authorities recognize the public health benefits of sunscreens and strongly advise the use of sunscreen along with other protective measures from the sun.
