Two teams of scientists were honored with the Ciba Specialty Chemicals Research & Development award 2003 for two specially designed, troubleshooting technologies said to improve the performance of polymers. The first team included Hans-Rudolf Meier (research, coating effects) and Gerrit Knobloch (application technology, plastic additives), who worked to solve the problem of the migration of antioxidants and antiozonants when used in rubber compounds. Through the development of a new type of grafting technology, the scientists were able to effectively “anchor” the additive in the rubber polymer, Ciba executives said. The result, Ciba Irgazone 997, was launched in July 2003. The second team, led by Philippe Bugnon (research, coating effects), targeted the problem of warping caused by coloration when pigments are used in molded plastics. Ciba executives insisted that warping has in the past severely hampered the broader use of pigment-colored plastic for items where durable strength and stability are required. The team found a means of controlling this nucleating power of pigments in plastics through dynamic self-healing interface control. The resultant product Ciba Cromophtal Red 2028 is now used in polyolefin moldings. In other news, Ciba opened a new technical center to support its colored effects and colorant customers. The service lab operates in a network of facilities known within the company as the Global Technical center.
