The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling numerous candles from Kohl’s and a wintergreen oil used for crafts. The first recall is for Kohl’s three-wick Sonoma Goods For Life branded candles due to fire and burn hazards. About 512,000 units were involved in the Nov. 10 recall as candle’s high flames can ignite the surface of the wax or cause the glass to break, posing fire and burn hazards. According to the CPSC website, 30 different varieties are involved in the recall with names like “Happy Day” “Enjoy” and “Our Home” in fragrances spanning from pumpkin spice to honeydew raspberry sangria. The candles come in glass containers with metal lids. The model is the design/language on the exterior of the glass container. The fragrance, style number, UPC and date code are contained on the label on the bottom of the glass container. At press time, Kohl’s has received 29 reports involving high flames and/or breaking glass containers with the three-wick candles, including five incidents resulting in minor burn injuries and six incidents involving minor property damage including burn marks on furniture, carpet, and/or countertops. The products were manufactured in China and were sold at Kohl’s stores nationwide and online at www.Kohls.com from December 2019 through October 2020 for about $20. In other news, Bolek’s Craft Supplys Inc. teamed up with CPSC to recall its Crafty Bubbles Wintergreen Essential Oil. The hazard is that the product contains the substance methyl salicylate, which must be in child resistant packaging as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA). The packaging of the product is not child resistant, posing a poisoning risk if the contents are swallowed by young children. About 5,600 units were involved in the recall and involves Crafty Bubbles Wintergreen Essential oil in amber 15 mL and 100 mL bottles with a black continuous thread cap. “Crafty Bubbles,” “Wintergreen Essential Oil” and the volume amount are printed on the white label on the front of each bottle. Products were manufacturered in the US and sold at Bolek’s Craft Supplys and Hobby Lobby stores nationwide and online at Bolek's Craft Supplys, Notions Marketing, Petersen-Arne, Hobby Lobby and other websites from January 2009 through January 2020 for between $3 and $13.
