Dial Corp., Scottsdale, AZ, reported sales increased to $333.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2002, compared to $310.0 million in 2001. Earnings per share from continuing operations beat the average estimate of eight analysts polled by Thomson First Call, as well as the company’s own forecast, by $0.02.

The consumer product maker attributed the 7.6% rise in fourth quarter revenue to strong sales of its new Dial body washes, Purex liquid detergent and Vienna sausage, as well as a 44% increase in Canadian sales. Fourth quarter revenue excludes sales from Dial’s Argentinean business, which is classified as discontinued operations due to its pending sale to private equity investor Southern Cross Group. Additionally, Dial’s fourth quarter gross margins remained level with the year-earlier period.
