The Environmental Working Group has again released its ranking of more than 18000 sunscreen products—and the NGO says that “consumers can have confidence in about one quarter of the sunscreen products on store shelves this year” based on its review.

Last year, 20% recieved EWG’s best ratings, and only 8% scored well in 2010, according to the group.

“FDA’s decades of foot-dragging has brought us a marketplace of mostly subpar sunscreen products,” said Environmental Working Group senior analyst Nneka Leiba, M. Phil., M.P.H. “While we’re grateful to see the general market improve, we wish we could assure consumers that 100% of sunscreens sold in the US are effective and safe. We can’t.”

In response to the recent decision by FDA to delay implementation of the final sunscreen safety standards, EWG says it has filed a Freedom of Information (FOIA) request forany and all documented communications between FDA and officials with the industry’s trade associations.
