Cosmetics and more added to retailer’s more sustainable products roster.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has joined Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly. The retailer will feature cosmetics and other items that have earned the EWG Verified mark. Amazon says its Climate Pledge Friendly initiative makes it easy for consumers to shop for more sustainable products; products that hold one or more of the certifications that are part of the program receive a Climate Pledge Friendly badge. Products that earn the EWG Verified designation are free from “chemicals of concern” and meet the transparency guidelines EWG. Amazon launched its Climate Pledge Friendly program in 2020. Today, the program includes more than 75,000 products. Amazon partnered with external certifications, including governmental agencies, non-profits, and independent laboratories, to help it distinguish more sustainable products. In addition to EWG, Amazon’s current certifiers include Carbon Fund’s Carbonfree Certified, CarbonNeutral product by Natural Capital Partners, Certified Animal Welfare Approved, Climate neutral by ClimatePartner, Compact by Design, Cradle to Cradle Certified, Fairtrade International, The Forest Stewardship Council, U.S. EPA Safer Choice, and Regenerative Organic Certified, among others. Amazon has also created its certification, Compact by Design, to identify products that have a more efficient design—such as the removal of excess air and water and products that require less packaging and become more efficient to ship. Want more information on Amazon’s Compact by Design concept? Here’s a quick look. Amazon says it will routinely evaluate and reassess the certification landscape to ensure it includes the best partners to help consumers shop for more sustainable products. “We are delighted that Amazon has selected the EWG Verified mark to include in its effort to feature more sustainable products as a way to protect our climate,” said EWG President Ken Cook. “When Amazon shoppers see the Climate Pledge Friendly badge on a product that has earned the EWG Verified mark, they will immediately know that, in addition to meeting our industry-leading benchmarks for health, it is also one of the products identified as more sustainable on Amazon.” Each organization that is part of Climate Pledge Friendly was vetted by sustainability experts within Amazon and third-party consultants. “The EWG VERIFIED mark is recognized as the gold standard for health and transparency,” said Carla Burns, EWG’s senior director of cosmetic science. “EWG has long verified cosmetics and other personal care products, and recently expanded into household cleaners, baby diapers and ingredients. “Because of this new EWG partnership with Amazon, more consumers will learn about the rigorous science-based criteria we’ve developed to measure a product’s impact on human health and our fragile environment,” When consumers see a product with the Climate Pledge Friendly badge, they’ll also be able to learn more about the certification behind it. Items covered by the Climate Pledge Friendly include grocery, household, fashion, beauty and personal electronics products, among others from a range of categories. To browse by category, visit www.amazon.com/ClimatePledgeFriendly and click the “Shop” tab at the top of the page. “Customers want a way to make more sustainable and informed shopping choices, and Climate Pledge Friendly is ramping up its efforts to help customers know their purchases meet sustainability standards and are helping to preserve the natural world,” said Adam Werbach, global lead for Sustainable Shopping at Amazon. “We are excited to add EWG Verified to the Climate Pledge Friendly program’s trusted third-party certifications, which allow customers to discover and shop even more Climate Pledge Friendly brands and products.”
