First Annual HBA Awards Dinner a Great Success

Over 500 cosmetics, fragrance and personal care industry members attended the First Annual HBA Industry Awards Dinner on Oct. 14 at The New York Hilton. The industry turned out in strength to recognize the recipients of several new awards as well as to celebrate the presentation of Third Annual International Package Design Awards.

Neil Scancarella, executive vice president, research and development for Revlon Inc., received the Lifetime Achievement in Product Development Award. Overwhelmingly selected by his peers for achievements over his 34-year career, Mr. Scancarella was cited for his contributions to the advancement of technology, the creation of innovative products, technical competency, leadership, vision and managerial skills.

Roger Caracappa, senior vice president, global packaging, Estee Lauder Corp., was named Packaging Executive of the Year. Mr. Caracappa was selected by packaging suppliers in the cosmetic, personal care and fragrance industries for his devotion to packaging excellence throughout his career. For the past 10 years, he has led all promotional marketing for Estee Lauder U.S.A. and Canada, as well as marketing operations and merchandising for makeup, treatment and fragrance.

The Procter & Gamble cosmetics team of Lee Ellen Drechsler, section manager, R&D; Tom Rabe, principal scientist, global color cosmetics and Ed Smith, research fellow, was recognized with the New Product R&D Technical Team Award for its work on Max Factor Lipfinity and Cover Girl Outlast lip products.

Since its inception three years ago, the International Package Design Awards (IPDA) have grown to be the most important competition in the industry to recognize excellence and innovation in packaging for the cosmetics, fine fragrance and personal care industries.

The IPDA 2002 honorees were named at the HBA Industry Awards Dinner as follows:

CATEGORY LEADERS – Cosmetics – Les Gouaches Artist Palette by Chanel

Personal Care – PureOlogy Serious Colour Care by PureOlogy

Prestige Skin Care – Futuresse by Biodroga

Mass Skin Care – reflect.com by reflect.com

Prestige Fragrance – Diesel Green by Marbert

Mass Fragrance – Velocity by Mary Kay

The honored packages, along with all the finalists, were on display at the Cosmetic Packaging & Design booth #1701 at HBA Global Expo.

This year over 300 entries from the U.S. and around the world were submitted for the competition. HBA’s committee of 100 industry experts reviewed all the entries and chose finalists in each category. The finalists were then presented to a panel of judges made up of heads of design groups of the major marketing companies. Those judges then selected a leading package in each category and the grand award recipient.
