January 18, 2012

After 22 years as the American Cleaning Institute’s (ACI) top lobbyist, Dennis Griesing is retiring as vice president of government affairs. He will be succeeded by Senior Director of Government Affairs Douglas Troutman, who was named vice president and counsel, government affairs, effective January 30. “The cleaning products industry has never had a more effective legislative and regulatory advocate than Dennis Griesing,” said Ernie Rosenberg, ACI president and CEO. “With great success, he shared ACI’s policy positions with members of Congress, executive branch officials, state legislators and regulators. ACI and our members are extraordinarily grateful to Dennis for his outstanding work on behalf of our industry.” Rosenberg added that “ACI is extremely fortunate to have Doug Troutman as our new vice president and counsel of government affairs. He brings to the table years of experience on Capitol Hill and in the trade association sector. Doug will continue to be a very knowledgeable and resourceful advocate for the cleaning products industry in the years ahead.” Griesing joined ACI—then The Soap and Detergent Association—in January 1990 with a dozen years of professional government relations experience at the federal, state and local levels. During his tenure at ACI, Griesing advocated on numerous issues for the cleaning product supply chain, including reform of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), phosphate defense, packaging, advertising issues, eco-labeling, and environmentally-preferable procurement, among many others. Troutman joined ACI in 2007 as director of government affairs, coming from Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Inc.’s Washington, D.C. office, where he was senior manager, legislative affairs. He previously worked as senior manager, government relations, at the National Electrical Manufacturers Association in Arlington, Virginia. Troutman was a legislative aide to U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (PA) from 1992 to 1996. He later worked as associate vice president at Newmyer Associates in Arlington, VA and served as a law clerk in the Delaware County, Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Office. Troutman earned his J.D. from the Villanova University School of Law, and his B.A. in international affairs and Russian studies from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.He is admitted to practice in New Jersey. Jacob Cassady rounds out the ACI Government Affairs team. He has served as manager of government affairs since 2010.
