The Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers & Distributors Association (ICMAD), Chicago, announced the top three winners of the 2002 ICMAD Young Designers Competition at the board of directors meeting on Oct. 15.

The Young Designers Competition showcases student talent in personal care packaging design. The goal of the competition, which began in 1999, is to encourage and develop young creative talent that will help build the future of the cosmetics industry. The winners were selected from dozens of entries submitted by students at five highly acclaimed schools of design. Executives said the three winning ICMAD Young Designers showed truly exemplary creativity and knowledge of cosmetic packaging needs. The award criteria includes uniqueness, ability to be reproduced economically, ease of use and storage.

Tammy Teehan, a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, NY, took first place and a cash prize of $2,500 for “Blue Goo Styling Gel.” Jessica Weber, a student at Columbus College of Art, Columbus, OH, won second place and $1,500 for “Soothe Relaxation Package” and James Vondra, of the American Academy of Art, Chicago, IL, placed third, receiving $1000 for “UVShield Sunblock.”

The panel of judges included Jerome Berard, Berard Associates; Allen Burke, QVC; Geoffrey Donaldson, The Sea Change Group; Annette Green, The Fragrance Foundation; Gregg Lukasiewicz, Lukasiewicz Design and Kenneth Noskin.

“The ICMAD Young Designers Competitions attracts schools with some of the finest design departments in the country,” said ICMAD president Ian Ginsberg of Bigelow Trading Ltd. “The work of all the students in our competition proves there will be considerable talent available to the cosmetics industry in the future.”

Several ICMAD member companies sponsored the competition, and Models Prefer Ltd. provided the cash awards for each winner.
