And everyone thought being “Mrs. Tom Cruise” would destroy her acting career. Katie Holmes is the star of a promotional short film for John Frieda Professional Hair Care’s new at-home foam hair color line which debuts tonight at Lavo nightclub in Manhattan.

The short film, called “The Decision,” centers around a famous actress, Joan Hudson (played by Holmes), who makes the choice to split from her colorist to color her hair herself using Precision Foam Colour by John Frieda. The film looks to address the anxiety that goes along with the decision of coloring hair at home. It will serve in the same vein as short films by Lanvin for H&M and Chanel Coco Mademoiselle, which tell a brief story and promote a brand at the same time. Foam hair color is emerging as a beauty trend in the hair coloring category in 2011, as versions from Clairol, L’Oréal and Samy have also hit the market this year.

With consumers holding on to their cash longer than ever, many are opting to touch up their hair color at home rather than return to the salon.
