• Just before its Annual Scientific Meeting & Technology Showcase in New York City on Dec. 6-7, 2012, the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) has planned two education courses at the New York Hilton.

Guided by consultant David Steinberg, the “Regulatory Update” course on Dec. 5 will concentrate on the major changes to the regulations of personal care products around the world, and will be updated to reflect the latest changes, according to SCC.

On the docket are sunscreen regulations in the US, including how to make a drug fact box and updates of TEAs. Other topics to be covered include cosmetic issues, other OTC regulations, California, FDA electronic filings for OTC drugs, and EU related issues.

The second educational course is “Cosmetic Raw Materials.” Also slated for Dec. 5, it is a session that proves useful to individuals new to the industry, whether they are involved in formulation, quality control, technical service, sales, or marketing. This raw materials course can also provide a great review and update for those with some experience in cosmetics, according to SCC.

The course, which will be taught by Mark Chandler of Adaptive Cosmetic Technology Solutions, will cover the cosmetic raw material market and offer introduction to basic cosmetic chemistry. Materials to be explored include emollients, emulsifiers, thickener/stabilizers, humectants, pigments, cleansing surfactants, conditioning agents, styling polymers, “active” ingredients, “functional” materials and preservatives.

The fee is $350 per course for SCC members and $450 per course for non-members.
