Monoï de Tahiti Celebrates Its Origins

Monoï de Tahiti obtained its Appellation of Origin 20 years ago. The company notes that despite a flurry of ecolabels during the past decade, none of them authenticate a particular geographic area.

Introduced in the 1930s for wines, the notion of Appellations of Origin aims to protect products that source their authenticity and typical characteristics both in their geographical origin and in traditional know-­‐how. This highlights the close ties that exist between a natural product and the region of origin. In 1992, after four years of research, French Polynesia obtained an Appellation of Origin for its Monoï de Tahiti. This guarantees consumers the oil’s quality and authenticity via its ingredients, the way in which it is produced and its concentrations. For Tahiti and her Islands, it is a way of protecting a cultural heritage and the bounty of its biodiversity.
