McIntyre has launched two preservative systems and one antimicrobial emollient engineered for formaldehyde- and paraben-free formulations: Phenagon PBD, Mackstat GCM and Mackaderm GCP.

In terms of efficacy, Phenagon PBD incorporates the antibacterial phenoxyethanol in combination with two organic acids known for their use as food preservatives, benzoic acid and dehydroacetic acid. Mackstat GCM and Mackaderm GCP are patent-pending technologies that employ glyceryl esters with a high monoester content. The former combines glyceryl caprylate with methylisothiazolinone (MIT), providing a synergistic effect that makes this compound more efficacious than MIT alone and less sensitizing than the commonly used mixtures of MIT with chloroisothiazolinone. Mackaderm GCP consists of a glyceryl ester coupled with the safe, non-irritating and non-sensitizing phenethyl alcohol.

The three products offer broad protection against gram positive/negative bacteria, yeast and mold. According to McIntyre, the efficacy of these preservation systems is demonstrated in challenge studies available to all customers.
