US Patent No. 12,053,535 B1 (Alvin Kershman, Jeff Shear, Doreen Linze); Shear Kershman Laboratories, Inc. has patented a novel lip balm formula. It consists of at least one lipid (hydrogenated palm oil), a surfactant and a caffeine active. The formula may also contain other components, such as nicotine or a testosterone active.

The balm contain approximately 25-60 wt.% of surfactant based on the total weight of the formulation. The surfactant is a mixture of mono- and diglycerides and propylene glycol and it has an HLB of 4. 

The lip balm, when applied to a lip, delivers the active in less than ten minutes, according to the literature.
