The Procter & Gamble Company today announced the following executive changes: Wolfgang C. Berndt, 58, president, global fabric and home care will retire on September 1, 2001 after more than 34 years of service. In anticipation of Berndt’s retirement, Robert A. McDonald, 48, currently president, global fabric care, was elected president, global fabric and home care, effective immediately.

P&G president and chief executive A.G. Lafley said, “Wolfgang Berndt leaves a legacy of accomplishments that touch virtually every part of our company. He epitomizes what it means to be a global business leader, combining the skills to lead businesses anywhere in the world and the personal integrity and values that instill trust and respect among both employees and external stakeholders.”

John E. Pepper, P&G’s chairman of the board, said, “Wolf can truly be called the father of P&G’s business in Central and Eastern Europe. More than a decade ago, he was instrumental in convincing the company to take bold steps to enter Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Russia, and in convincing government leaders and potential partners to believe in P&G and our commitment to their countries. His wise judgment and the quality of his character will be greatly missed. He has left a lasting imprint on our company and thousands of individuals in it.”

Speaking about Mr. Berndt’s successor, Mr. Lafley said, “Bob McDonald is superbly qualified to run the fabric and home care business. His extensive background in managing businesses globally coupled with his expertise and dedication to building our brands will assure that fabric and home care continues to create world-class products that delight our consumers.”
