Procter & Gamble Co. has donated $300,000 in cash and water-cleaning packets to earthquake survivors in Pakistan as part of a $600,000 alliance with the United Agency for International Development (USAID). The partnership involves $870,000 in cash and $30,000 in Procter-made PUR water purification sachets. That will translate to 5.5 million packets of PUR packets, enough to make 55 million liters of safe drinking water. USAID will match Procter’s contribution to support the purchase of materials, such as buckets and cloths, needed to use PUR. The sachets, each about the size of a ketchup packet, carry all of the ingredients used to treat water in the United States. When the contents are mixed into a container of water, dirt and contaminants sink to the bottom. The water is then filtered through a cloth. In addition to the donations through the partnership with USAID, Procter said it will donate another $150,000 to its partners for Pakistan earthquake relief.
