Robert Bunsen’s Big 200

Famous chemist is celebrated around the world.

A favorite instrument in the lab, the Bunsen burner is known to most chemists all over the globe. Today, the German chemist Robert Bunsen is being celebrated for his would be 200th birthday with a colorful Google Doodle.

Bunsen discovered the elementsRubidium and Caesium. He investigated emission spectra of heated elements and many research experiments in chemistry. He developed several gas-analytical methods, was a pioneer in photochemistry, and did early work in the field of organoarsenic chemistry. With his laboratory assistant, Peter Desaga, he developed the Bunsen burner, an improvement on the laboratory burners then in use.
