Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor, will serve as honorary chairman of the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, set to begin next week in Salt Lake City, UT. Nu Skin/Pharmanex, a UT-based distributor of personal care products, is the official sponsor of the 2002 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Spirit Awards.

The U.S. Olympic Spirit Award was created in 1968 by the United States Organizing Committee (USOC) to acknowledge American athletes who not only perform well in the Olympic Games, but who have also overcome physical and emotional adversity to reach their Olympic goals. Previous award winners include Rulon Gardner, Laura Wilkinson, Dan Jansen, Greg Louganis, Gail Devers and Kerry Strug.

“The USOC feels there is no one more qualified to present an award recognizing courage and commitment in overcoming adversity than former Mayor Giuliani,” said Lloyd Ward, chief executive officer, USOC. “He embodies the American spirit that the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award celebrates.”

Mr. Giuliani will serve as honorary chairman of the selection committee comprised of alumni Olympians, such as Bonnie Warner (luge ’84, ’88, ’92), Brian Boitano (men’s figure skating, ’84, ’88) and five others. The committee will choose the winners of the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award based on public input, and the criteria established for the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award: commitment, courage, perseverance and vision. Mr. Guliani will present the awards on national television shortly after the close the 2002 Winter Games.
