Profits at The Gillette Co. rose 6% in the fourth quarter, the company said Thursday, largely due to stronger blade and razor sales. Boston-based Gillette reported profits of $368 million, up 6% from a year ago. Income from continuing operations was $358 million, up 9%. Gillette reported record earnings for 2003, with net income up 14% to $1.39 billion. Profits increased 17% from 2002.

Net sales rose 9%, to $9.25 billion, led by blade and razor sales, which rose 13% to $3.87 billion. Duracell battery sales were up 6%, to $2.02 billion.

However, quarterly sales were up just 4% to $2.62 billion. The company said growth was hampered by advance shipments for holiday sales promotions in the third quarter, and weak demand for Braun and oral care products in Europe, despite a favorable exchange rate.
