SCC Says ‘Meet Me in St. Louis’

Scientific seminar set for June 6, 7 2013.

The Society of Cosmetic Chemists will hold its Annual Scientific Seminar on June 6th and 7th at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel. This Seminar will be hosted by the chapters in Area II which include the Lake Erie, Midwest, Ohio Valley, Ontario, St. Louis and Twin Cities Chapters. It will be the last Scientific Seminar until at least 2017 as the Society focuses on hosting the 2016 IFSCC Congress.

The Seminar’s Technical Program was arranged by the Committee on Scientific Affairs which is chaired this year by Christine Popoff, Ph.D. (Energizer Personal Care).


The Seminar will begin on Thursday morning with Session A–Skin Health, Microbiology and Formulations, moderated by Akshay Talati (Estée Lauder). The session will open with aKeynote Address Lecture from Steve Schnittger (Estée Lauder), on “A Review of Preservation in Cosmetics, Skin Microflora and Objectionable Organisms.” Other featured presentations include “Formulation and Physico-Chemical Factors Determining the Performance of Skin Cleansing Soaps Containing Germ Protection,” Prem Chandar, Ph.D. (Unilever Research); “Use of Neutral Polysaccharides to Control Bacterial Biofilms on the Skin,” Amy Vanden Heuvel (Kimberly Clark); “Influencing Factors in the Use of Alternative Preservatives,” Sonja Luethje, Ph.D. (Schuelke) and “The Impact of Formulation on Microbial Efficacy of Active Ingredients in Hand Hygiene Products,” Christopher Heisig, Ph.D. (Steris Corp.)


Session B—Products for the Aging Population on Thursday afternoon will be moderated by Thomas Polefka (Life Science Solutions).This session will include presentations from Fred Zulli, Ph.D. (Mibelle Group), “Diabetic Skin: Models and Clinical Studies to Develop Actives to Treat Glycated Skin;” Amy Ziegler (Mintel International), “Tapping into the Mind of the Anti-Aging Consumer;” Yin Hessefort (Lubrizol), “Improved Integrity from Hair Within” and Yunsub Lee, Ph.D. (Miwon Commercial Co., Ltd.), “Use of Tripeptide for the Prevention and Repair of Skin Aging”.

On Friday morning, Dr. Howard Epstein (EMD Chemicals) will moderate Session C—Products for Ethnic and Emerging Markets with Zoe Diana Draelos, MD (Duke University) presenting the Keynote Address. Dr. Draelos will present “Understanding Personal Care Needs in Ethnic and Emerging Markets.” Other featured papers include Dr. Mike Farwick (Evonik Industries AG), “Tetrapeptide PKEK: Cosmetic Lightening Activity in Different Skin Types and Optimization of Skin Penetration;” Phillip Ludwig (Lonza), “Using Whole Plants and Plant Tissue Culture in a Two-Pronged Approach to Increase Skin Luminosity and Lighten the Skin” andAndrea Keenan (Dow Chemical), “Personal Care Polymers for Thermal Protection.”


Michael Fevola, Ph.D. (Johnson & Johnson) will moderate the final session, Session D—Consumer Preferences and Sensory Drivers.Featured presentations will include “Product Development for Personal Care in Latin America,” Lisa Gandolfi, Ph.D. (Clariant Corp.); “Development of a Sensory Lexicon and Procedure for a Complex Cosmetic Product: Nail Polish,” Kardi Koppel, Ph.D. (Sensory Analysis Center); “Analysis of Sensorial Preferences in Skin Care Across South America and Asia,” Paula Lennon, Ph.D. (Gattefosse) and “Stick it to the Stick: Insights and Advances in Lip Balm Structure and Testing Methodologies,” Gary Agism (Pfizer Consumer Healthcare).

The Committee on Scientific Affairs has also arranged four Mini-Breakfast Seminars, two on Thursday and two on Friday morning from 7:30 a.m. until 8:45 a.m.The informal nature of these mini-breakfasts allows the opportunity for give and take, questions and answers.COSA Mini-Breakfasts are limited to 30 participants.
