Stepan Company is among 21 Safer Choice Partner of the Year award winners announced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and one of three recipients in the Safer Chemical Innovator category.

Stepan Company has been actively engaged with GreenBlue and CleanGredient database development and participated in the stakeholder group during the development of the first ingredient screen for surfactants. In 2006, five Stepan ingredients were approved. Stepan’s CleanGredient products have been verified by an independent third-party to pass EPA’s stringent Safer Choice standards. Today, the company has 30 surfactants in the CleanGredients database. Stepan was the first company to offer prototype formulations on www.cleangredients.org for formulators who expressed interest in Safer Choice certification, but may have limited product development resource or performance testing capabilities. This allows for a turnkey solution and continues to advance the principles of the Safer Choice Program.

Stepan has also participated in many continuous improvement efforts in the area of product development. In 2012, the company removed the phosphoric acid buffer from a high active, anionic surfactant and replaced it with a carbonate buffer in response to program requirements.

Frank Pacholec, VP-R&D/corporate sustainability officer and Anne Gariepy, North American technical service and sales development manager, attended a public ceremony at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC to accept the award.
