The suncare industry is getting impacted by “clean beauty” standards imposed by retailers. According to Iva Teixeira of Good Face Project, SPF actives are the most regulated category by retail policies. In fact, according to Teixeira, oxybenzone cannot get approved for use in most “clean beauty” scenarios.

“Retailers are under increasing consumer pressure. Consumers are asking more questions,” noted Teixeira. “Many ingredients require further toxicological studies.”

Why the popularity of “clean beauty?” According to Teixeira, it is one of the fastest-growing beauty categories for many retailers. Unfortunately, as “clean beauty” retail grows, more retailers ” become regulators and pseudoscientitsts.”

The good news? Teixeira said global “clean beauty standards are beginning to become more harmonized.”
