In a move to eliminate excess packaging and packaging waste, UK retailer Tesco will expect shoppers to have their own bags ready at their doorstep as the retailers will no longer provide non-essential plastic bags or tray liners for online orders. To ensure customer safety during the coronavirus pandemic, Tesco had used carrier bags for all online orders.

“We know how concerned many of you are about plastic, and we’re aware we have an important role to play in reducing plastic consumption,” the company said in a statement.

Tray liners and non-essential plastic bags will no longer be an option when customers checkout online, according to the company.`

Tesco is just the latest retailer to address packaging waste. During the pandemic, efforts to reduce packaging have actually accelerated. More personal care and home care companies are teaming up with TerraCycle and other recycling companies to reduce the amount of packaging material that ends up in waste streams.
