US retailers could set a an opening day record for the first day of the holiday selling season. According to MasterCard Advisors, Black Friday is expected to be the first $20 billion day in U.S. retail history, with sales projected at $20.3 billion, barring severe weather or other disruptions. The NPD Group’s predictions are positive too, with 17% of consumers polled shopping on Black Friday, up from last year’s 12%.

In terms of overall holiday spend, analysts predict that sales could rise anywhere from 2-6%. If spending reaches the high end of the scale, that would surpass last year’s 5.2% gain.
