Portman Denounces Galiano

It’s a swan’s song for an actress and a designer. Natalie Portman, a face of Parfums Christian Dior, has issued a statement disassociating herself from John Galliano, Dior’s head designer, in the wake of widening allegations he made anti-Semitic remarks.

“I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments that surfaced today,” stated Portman. “In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.”

She was referring to an amateur video that circulated online Monday in which an apparently inebriated Galliano appears to say, “I love Hitler.” Portman made no reference to Dior.

Galliano spent Monday at the police station in Paris as part of an ongoing investigation that he uttered anti-Semitic remarks in separate altercations.

Dior officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
