A Healthy Scalp & The Return of Natural Hairstyles for Spring 2024

Industry expert has the details on the latest beauty products for hairstyles in salons and at home.

Healthy looking hair never goes out of style. But for Spring 2024 it’s a foundational mind shift, and surprisingly it seems both clients and stylists are on the same page from the get-go.

We’re seeing a positive shift with consumers not only willing but wanting to put the work in up front before even getting to their styling product application.

Scalp care has now become a welcomed part of a new pre-styling approach to healthy scalp and hair as opposed to trying to improve the appearance of hair with styling and finishing products.  The consumer is on board with this concept similar to the way they’ve maintained their skin and are elevating their scalp and hair care to that same level of importance.  Wherein decades past there was a lot more coaxing involved for this pre-treat ideology.

Today, it seems creating an environment for and maintaining healthy hair is getting a new level of respect including the inclination towards no-heat styling or at least making pre-heat protection a priority for this season’s natural looking and easy-care hair trends.

Back To Bobs…

We’ve seen this timeless trend referred to by many names.  Whether it’s called Blunt, Choppy, Baroque, Le Petite, Mini or Asymmetrical, all bobs are back for Spring 2024.  It seems almost everyone this season is into chopping their long locks like we haven’t seen since the 90’s, such as Hailey Bieber with her sleek chic blunt bob, Halle Berry’s curly asymmetrical bob and Zendaya’s full bouncy baroque bob.

Whether it be a big chop cutting off several inches of hair or frequent trims to maintain the look, it means most dry damaged ends will no longer exist making this is a big first step towards healthier hair.  But a thriving scalp and hair environment needs to be maintained through product application much like caring for the skin on our face, it makes a big difference.

So, we are recommending to our guests a weekly application of the scalp enhancing duo.  First, our Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Probiotic Scalp Scrub with Certified Organic Sucrose and 31 Certified Organic Herbs fortified with three varieties of Certified Organic Camelia sensis for antioxidant effects as pre and prebiotics that offer protection to the scalp. This can be paired with its collection companion, our Tela Probiotic Hair Mask. These products can be used along with the entire Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Life Force Collection or as add-on products to any P2 by Philip Pelusi product system.

The Tela Probiotic Scalp Scrub is a pre-shampoo treatment to help stimulate and exfoliate the scalp while depositing enhancing ingredients. USDA Certified Organic Sugar Cane Granules put the ‘scrub’ in this amazing scalp enriching product. These granules help to lift dead skin cells, dirt and debris from the scalp and hair.  They help create a cleaner, healthier scalp environment and help create a better deposit of the nutritional scalp ingredients in the product such as Milk Thistle Oil and the Tela Hair Immunity Complex containing Pre and Probiotics which are in every Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Life Force Collection product.

The Tela Hair Immunity Complex is a combination of Pre and Probiotics derived from the Fermented Kelp Extract to help strengthen and hydrate the scalp and leaves hair shiny, full of body, with increased elasticity.  Seaweed is also a key source of antioxidants that help fight oxidation, inflammation of the scalp, and helps protect color and strength from free radical pollutants. It is also well known that Kelp is abundant in minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and proteins.  Distribute a tablespoon throughout the scalp and massage for a few minutes and rinse.

Next, cleanse the hair and rinse thoroughly, squeeze dripping moisture, then massage in the Tela Probiotic Hair Mask and leave on for 5-10 minutes.  This adds another dose of Pre and Probiotics and serves as an anti-color fade, restorative mask that helps creates gleaming shine and color vibrancy.  Hair is left full of body and feeling healthy.

The Tela Probiotic Hair Mask also contains our Patent Pending Hydro Charged Pelusi Ceramide Complex, identified as Cermide2 on the bottle label.  This cosmeceutical complex, available exclusively at Philip Pelusi, is a microemulsion of plant derived ceramides that are functionally similar to hair’s natural lipids in the hair’s cuticle layer.  They help reinforce intercellular adhesion in the cuticle as well as reinforcing the cuticle layer’s adhesion to hair’s cortex by replacing ceramides that are removed during routine color and chemical services.  This therefore helps to bond color treated hair’s often damaged cuticle layer to the cortex, so color molecules are also sealed in below.  Use the Tela Probiotic Hair Mask instead of  regular conditioner the day you use it.

Pump up the volume for Spring 2024 hairstyles….

Lots of Volume

Although some of this season’s trends are worn smooth and chic such as a blunt cut bob, most looks for Spring 2024 call for volume and body.  This seems true of both natural textures and hot tooled styles alike.  One of the most noteworthy examples of this big volume trend is style chameleon actress and singer Zendaya’s recent beautiful baroque bob which has that old Hollywood glam vibe.

One of the best ways to describe this current big volume trend is if you put Mary Tyler Moore’s hairstyle from the 60’s into a time machine and modernized it for 2024.  Soft and feminine with big and bold volume.  We’ve been creating these voluminous styles while still meeting the consumer demand for healthy scalp ingredients by recommending our Tela Life Force Fountain of Hair Vitality Serum, also part of the Tela Life Force Collection.

This is an all in one, multi task style and treatment serum fits perfectly with today’s healthy scalp trend.  We use the Tela Vitality Serum as a primer to pre-treat the scalp and prep the hair.  Massage 4-6 pumps onto the scalp and throughout the length of hair to impart light to moderate texture.  Tela Vitality Serum provides hydration, shine and smoothing benefits.  It can also be applied as part of a weekly deep treatment with the Tela Probiotic Hair Mask to amplify the strengthening benefits.

It contains the Tela Hair Immunity Complex with Pre and Probiotic Enzymes, Fermented Kelp Extract and the Hydro-Charged Ceramide Complex to help create brilliant shine, moisturized and stronger hair, reduced frizz and thermal protection.  And it helps body and volume last longer throughout the day.

As another option to hit the healthy big volume mark, we are also recommending our P2 by Philip Pelusi RepairHair Smart Styling Treatment which leaves the hair with even more texture than the Tela Vitality Serum.  It is normally applied to damp hair prior to any other styling product, but P2 RepairHair can also be applied to dry hair prior to flat or curling iron work or hot roller set making it totally unique.  It instantly turns your heat styler into a deep conditioning tool.

P2 RepairHair contains our proprietary, highly specialized Wheat Protein Micro-emulsion which through Microemulsion Technology are the right molecular size to easily penetrate damaged sites, providing thermal protection and heat activated strengthening meaning the heat from styling tools creates a much deeper and quicker penetration.  By filling in these porous openings in the hair strand, color molecules are retained more securely, significantly reducing color fade.  This modern day leave-in treatment is a quick and effective way to add strength and hair structure resulting in longer lasting styles and more volume.  And it improves the condition of any hair texture.

Natural Brunette

Once considered a more traditional hue, this season brunette hair color is one of the ‘it’ trends.  Stars such as Riley Keough, Miley Cyrus and even Emma Stone, who normally dons her signature red locks, have all been wearing deep brunette hair color.

This Spring brunette hues look rich luxurious and are being worn either with warm or cool tones.  Warm brunette hair colors include chestnut, cinnamon, caramel, and mocha.  While cooler tones connote ash, hazelnut, iced coffee, and smoky brown.  Application techniques can be solid all over color or balayage and other lower maintenance colors.

For some going brunette means a full color change while others are requesting blending warmer or cooler brown tones with natural hair color.  Either way, protecting the color investment and keeping hair looking healthy is paramount to the guest being happy with their color service long term.  So, we are recommending a combination of Gluten-free Plant Proteins to strengthen with our P2 by Philip Pelusi Xtreme Daily HairRx Treatment.

Gluten Free Wheat, Corn and Soy Proteins and our exclusive Hydro Charge Pelusi Ceramide Complex, all work together in our P2 Xtreme Daily HaiRx to fill in missing, broken, or chipped cuticle and cortex layers.  The science of substantivity is at work here.  The right type plant derived protein at the right molecular size allows the very best, deepest, and long-lasting absorption of the product.  This action also helps seal in color molecules while simultaneously creating a smoother cuticle layer for luxurious shine.

Next, we layer on top a tablespoon of the aforementioned Tela Probiotic Hair Mask and leave on 5 – 10 minutes or longer.  The Tela Probiotic Hair Mask contains Certified Organic Peppermint and Aloe to help soothe and calm scalp, perfect to meet the demands of today’s scalp-centric consumer.  The Certified Organic Aloe also weightlessly moistures the hair and scalp and works well on any texture.  The end result is greater hydrated and healthy looking and performing hair and a healthier scalp environment.
