A new sunscreen applicator is slowly making noise in the industry.
By: Melissa Meisel
September 6, 2016
Products with SPF protection are daily essentials for more consumers by the minute. However, the application of chalky, sticky, pasty formulations can get in the way of getting out the door. Arianna Megaro has come up with a sun care solution with The BlokRok. After all, beauty devices are on the rise, as previously reported in Happi (link here). Just fill the bottle with your favorite sunscreen or lotion, lock the top with The Blokrok and roll it on. Or, use an existing sunblock bottle with the Bottle Rok-It topper, which features the same rolling applicator and fits right onto certain bottles and tubes. This new way to apply sunscreen was prompted by concern about skin cancer. After a family member was diagnosed, Megaro realized that most people skip the sunscreen because it’s so messy and cumbersome. After two years of prototyping, it’s now ready to roll—pun intended. “My ‘Aha’ moment was when I realized that an applicator had to be fun – forget economical, environmental, and effective – these were givens, but putting on sunscreen had to become a much less negative experience if I was going to tap into the best solution to skin disease,” the Charleston, SC native told Happi in an interview. According to Magaro, her inspiration for BlokRok and the Bottle Rok-It was to make a difference in the way people take care of their skin by offering a cleaner and less wasteful lotion application experience. The company has a patent on the BlokRok as well as a pending patent on additional design innovations. Bottle Rok-It has a patent as well as a pending patent on additional design creations. This rising sun care accessory company has big plans to expand. According to Magaro, Blokrok launched exclusively online this spring with indie shopping hub The Grommet (www.thegrommet.com), after the inventor and the retailer met at the Outdoor Retailer show last August in Salt Lake City. Currently, BlokRok is sold on The Grommet, Amazon and its own website, www.theblokrok.com. “We are currently speaking with larger retailers about roll-out plans for Spring and Summer 2017, and we will initiate sales in some brick and mortar shops later this summer and continue to grow sales in that department,” she said. “BlokRok belongs everywhere people go outdoors—on the beach, golf course, hiking trail, tennis court—everywhere clean hands and sun protection are essential.”
