Water loving; defined by the American society for Testing and Materials as "a descriptive term applied to the group or radical of a surfactant molecule that makes or tends to make it soluble in water".  Associated with the hydrophilic portion of a surfactant molecule is the opposite hydrophobic ("water-hating") portion.  The special capabilities of surfactants in loosening dirt are a direct consequence of these incompatible component parts, which have opposite attractions toward dirt and toward water.
