New Course on Molecular Biology for Chemists

The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) is offering a new course designed for cosmetic chemists to help them understand the very basic principles behind molecular biology, specifically selected biological markers, gene expression and relevance to cosmetic science. “Molecular Biology, Gene Express for the Cosmetic Chemist” will be held Nov. 13 at the SCC’s national headquarters in New York City.

Topics covered will include the very basic principles of molecular biology/gene expression; how do genes relate to the skin’s appearance; the language of molecular biology; epigenetics and the relevance to cosmetics; and a general discussion on the new scientific information and the relevance to old FDA Regulations (i.e. Title 21 CFR the Food Drug and Cosmetic Act) and global regulations around the world.

The instructor is Howard Epstein, Ph.D., director of technical services for EMD Chemicals. He was a scholar in residence at the University of Cincinnati department of dermatology and received his Ph.D. in Pharmacognasy from the Union Institute & University in Cincinnati, OH during that time.

Epstein has been in the cosmetic industry for many years since he began his career formulating cosmetics for Estée Lauder, Maybelline, Max Factor, Bausch & Lomb and Kao Brands.
