Mel Hoyt, a stalwart of the cosmetic industry, passed away suddenly on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25.

Hoyt spent 50-plus years working and selling chemicals for companies including GAF (now ISP), BASF, Onyx Chemical, Lonza, ISI, and most recently, BioOrganic Concepts. He was considered an expert in cosmetic polymers, quats and surfactants.

In the cosmetic Industry, Hoyt was well known for his abilities to solve formulating problems as well as his ability to entertain. As a drummer, he and a group of his talented industry friends were often asked to be the dance band of choice at many SCC functions.

After his military assignment in the Navy, Hoyt graduated from City University of New York. He was married to Donna Chiese and had three sons and numerous grandchildren of whom he was especially proud.

Hoyt’s colleagues, noting his amazing stamina, lovingly gave him the nickname of the “energizer bunny,” because he never stopped working—day and night.
