Del Laboratories Inc. plans to move nearly 500 jobs to its Rocky Point, N.C., plant from its operations in Farmingdale, N.Y. As reported Wednesday by the Wilmington (N.C.) Star-News, the cosmetics company cited higher business costs in New York for the action. The company also said it needs to reinvest in equipment, making it a good time to move.

Del Labs will hire 100 people immediately and hopes to hire more than 480 people by early summer 2004. Some employees may relocate from the New York facilities, although the exact number isn’t known. A company representative wasn’t immediately available for further information.

According to its 2001 annual report, Del Labs has facilities in Farmingdale, Little Falls and Canajoharie, N.Y.; Newark, N.J.; and Rocky Point, N.C. The Farmingdale plant is the main manufacturing operation for the cosmetics and pharmaceutical segments, while the Rocky Point plant serves as the main distribution center.

The company, best known for its Sally Hansen nail care lines and Orajel painkiller for gums, has about 1,400 employees worldwide. The work force relocation will more than triple the number of employees at the Rocky Point plant, located outside of Wilmington, N.C. Del Labs earned $9.8 million, or $1.14 a share, on sales of $332.7 million in 2001.

The company’s American Stock Exchange-listed shares last traded at $18.99, down 11 cents, or 0.6%.
