DSM-Firmenich will bring together top US medical professionals and public health advocates, personal care experts and sunscreen product specialists to discuss skin cancer, the urgent need for advanced sunscreen formulations to protect public health, and the importance of industry-government collaborations on June 13 in Washington, DC at the Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2168, from 10 am to noon.

Despite significant scientific advancements since Congress passed the Sunscreen Innovation Act a decade ago and the recent OTC drug monograph reforms, the US continues to lag behind other countries in adopting new sunscreen filters. The event will delve into the current sunscreen landscape in the US, drawing comparisons with other regions to discuss the numerous obstacles the sun care industry faces.

Key challenges include complex and inefficient regulatory review and approval processes; the lack of appropriate research funding for adopting enhanced toxicological safety and risk assessment methods that do not involve animal testing; and inadequate exclusivity and data protection provisions for OTC sunscreen drug innovation sponsors.
