Automatically purifies, hygienically humidifies and detects and destroys formaldehyde.

Dyson has unveiled its new purifying and humidifying technology—the Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool Formaldehyde. According to the comany, the unit automatically purifies and senses and destroys formaldehyde while using UV-C technology to remove 99.9% of bacteria in wate. It unit, which retails for $899.99, combines the brand’s latest solid-state formaldehyde sensor and full-machine H13 HEPA filtration with hygienic humidification capabilities. Sources of formaldehyde inside the home include pressed wood products, cleaning agents, carpets and DIY products such as paint, wallpapers and varnishes, according to Dyson. Being 500 times smaller than particles the size of 0.1 microns, formaldehyde is particularly difficult to capture. When left undetected, it can lead to prolonged exposure due to continuous release of airborne chemicals (off-gassing). “The off-gassing tendency of formaldehyde means that it can build up within the home and go undetected for years, while humidifiers without sufficient water treatment can project polluted water droplets into the air. Dyson has engineered a machine that tackles both of these problems, providing precise sensing and continuous destruction of formaldehyde, whilst hygienically humidifying for cleaner air,” said Alex Knox, VP of environmental care at Dyson.” The new Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool Formaldehyde features a solid-state sensor, specifically engineered to detect formaldehyde. While some gel-based formaldehyde sensors can deteriorate overtime and are easily confused with other VOC pollution, Dyson said its solid-state formaldehyde sensor works alongside a unique algorithm to precisely monitor formaldehyde levels—intelligently ignoring other gases which are detected by a dedicated VOC sensor. Dyson says its Selective Catalytic Oxidisation (SCO) filter continuously destroys formaldehyde at a molecular level. By re-engineering the machine airflow pathways to achieve fully-sealed HEPA 13 standard filtration, Dyson’s Purifier Humidify+Cool Formaldehyde captures H1N1 virus and 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns such as allergens, bacteria, pollen and mold spores, noted the company. The Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool Formaldehyde also uses UV-C technology and silver strands in the evaporator to inhibit bacteria growth, destroying 99.9% of bacteria in the water. Further, a highly reflective PTFE tube through which UV-C light is reflected down its length, ensures that bacteria are exposed to the UV-C rays multiple times rather than just once, to ensure their destruction. Inside the evaporator, interwoven silver strands provide biostatic properties to inhibit bacteria growth and the water is evaporated into a stream of purified air, drawn through Dyson’s 360-degree filters. This hygienically humidifies with treated water vapor, rather than droplets.
