Gorsen Resigns as Director of Toxic Substances Control in California

CSPA learned this week that Maureen Gorsen, the director of California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control submitted her letter of resignation to Governor Schwarzenegger March 2. Ms. Gorsen, who had been in her position for five and a half years, had spoken at CSPA meetings and worked closely with the Association on green chemistry and chemicals management issues. Ms. Gorsen’s resignation is effective March 15.

When the news of Ms. Gorsen’s resignation broke, CSPA issued the following response.

“The resignation of Maureen Gorsen from California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control is a big loss to the citizens of California. Ms. Gorsen has been an effective and dedicated leader in helping Governor Schwarzenegger make California a leader in green chemistry and chemicals management issues.  She listened to all sides and advocated sound chemical policy management.  Her approach of bringing different stakeholders to the table to find areas of common agreement was refreshing.  Although we didn’t always agree – we had great respect for her approach to developing sound public policy.  

 “We are appreciative of Ms. Gorsen’s approach in her work on the many issues surrounding green chemistry, particularly her willingness to reach out to and listen to the many stakeholders engaged in promoting new technologies and science that help protect the environment and public health.

 “We will miss working with Ms. Gorsen and look forward to our ongoing work with the Department and California Legislature to help assure our industry remains an active and responsible participant in green chemistry developments for the state.”
