Hair Color Course Led by Former Clairol Research Director • Hair color is a hot topic, no matter if it is done at the salon by a professional or at home over the sink. The SCC has scheduled a one-day course on July 19 in Newark, NJ, to give the student a basic understanding of natural hair color, and then discuss the current technologies that attempt to restore or change this color. Hair color products will be described by their chemistry as well as their formulation properties, according to SCC. The instructor is Dr. Keith Brown, who retired in July 2002 from his position as director of research for Clairol Inc., Stamford, CT. In his 28 years with Clairol, he made many contributions to the understanding of the chemistry and practice of hair dyeing. He has also worked on the synthesis of novel hair dyes, and on numerous other aspects of hair dye technology. He has co-authored more than 40 patents and publications in this field and has written several book chapters on the chemistry and practice of hair coloring. The class, which will be held at the Sheraton Newark Airport Hotel, will offer an introduction to semi-permanent hair dyes, hair bleaching, temporary hair dyes, permanent (oxidative) hair dyes and miscellaneous products like color removers, as well as a look at safety and regulatory issues. The two-day event, held May 15-16, is run by the New York Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. “The 2012 show achieved record breaking attendance with close to 5,500 people at the show on Day 1 and 3,500 on Day 2,” said 2012 Suppliers’ Day chair Debbie McCarthy, VP-sales and marketing, Kobo Products, Inc. “The committee would like to thank all participants for their support of the show.” Attendees crowded the show floor to learn more about the products and services from hundreds of industry suppliers. In fact, more than 350 companies displayed their wares during Suppliers’ Day. And, for the first time, Suppliers’ Day included Torch of Technology—A New Technology Showcase. This addition to the show gave suppliers the opportunity to showcase their new technologies in a designated area at the show, according to NYSCC.
