The Hampton University Skin of Color Research Institute (HUSCRI) is partnering with Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) to present its inaugural research symposium, “From Benchtop to Bedside,” Friday, April 30-Sunday, May 2, 2010, at the Colonial Williamsburg Lodge and Conference Center.

The 2010 research symposium, made possible in part by a grant from the L’Oréal Institute for Ethnic Hair and Skin Research, will feature world-class speakers from five continents and focus on diseases affecting patients with skin of color such as hyperpigmentation, melanoma and alopecia, among others. Attendees will learn about the latest research, treatments and newest tools in pigment cell biology and cutaneous disorders from leaders in the dermatology field.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, certain skin problems are more common among people with darker skin tones. A wide range of racial and ethnic groups, including African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics/Latinos and Native Americans, constitute people who have skin of color.

The deadline to submit abstracts for poster presentations is March 31. CME credits are available for this event.

Participating speakers are from institutions such as the National Institutes of Health, University of California-Irvine, Harvard University Medical School, Wake Forest University and the University of Colorado, to name a few.

The main goals of HUSCRI are to identify and understand the factors that contribute to racial disparities in skin disorders, generate knowledge to impact the understanding, treatment and prevention of skin diseases unique to individuals with skin of color and foster an environment which encourages relevant innovative basic science research.
