US Patent No. 12,453,696 B2 (Jean-Jacques Paufique); Societe Industrielle Limousine D’Applications Biologique, Objat, France, was awarded a US patent for method for obtaining an active ingredient comprising at least one hydrolysate of the rind of immature fruits of Punica granata (pomegranate) and use of that extract as a means to prevent and/or combat acne.

The method comprises solubilization of powder of the rind of immature Punica granatum fruit in water in a proportion of at least 50 g/l; enzymatic hydrolysis with the aid of a carbohydrase; separation of soluble and insoluble phases; recovery of the soluble phase and thermal enzymatic inactivation; and purification of polyphenolic compounds.

The invention relates to a specific active ingredient for skin comprising a hydrolysate of the rind of immature fruits of Punica granatum that is useful in cosmetics or dermatology, particularly for preventing and/or combating acne.   According to the inventors, it addresses the problem by proposing an active ingredient that is capable of effectively combating a multiplicity of parameters at the origin of acne.

According to the patent filing, the inventor has selected a precise stage in the ripening of Punica granatum fruits and a particular type of extraction, and that the specific choice of immature fruits of Punica granatum combined with enzymatic hydrolysis makes it possible to effectively improve the anti-acne effect compared to existing Punica granatum extracts.
