Consumers are looking to quercetin, a flavonoid found in fruits, vegetables and plants, for healthier skin.
According to Spate, the New York City-based research firm that analyzes millions of online consumer signals to identify the next big trend, there are an average of 99,500 searches every month in the US for quercetin, which is "high-volume" relative to other supplement product searches. It has grown over 55.5% in searches since last year.
Quercetin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and can be consumed as a supplement or applied topically in skincare. It is often paired with bromelain for similar anti-inflammatory properties. Bromelain is included in top related search terms alongside this trend in addition to allergies, side effects and supplement.
Searches for this ingredient reveal that consumers are turning to quercetin to relieve allergy symptoms in addition to a general interest in the ingredient and its various uses outside of health. As consumers increasingly turn towards self-care and consequently self-health, they have become more ingredient-conscious and interested in ingredients like quercetin and other phytonutrients for natural, green and effective solutions.
Other well-known antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E have become popular in beauty and skincare products for their protective properties.
Spate says there is currently medium competition with the following eight market leaders: MRM, Twinlab, Jarrow, Pure Encapsulations, Dr Axe, Now Foods, Thorne, and Douglas Laboratories.
