    Anna Trondoli, 31, is a senior scientist with a focus in face care at Johnson & Johnson in its São José dos Campos location in Brazil.  She has always had an affinity for math and science, which made her decision easy when she decided, at age 14, to enroll in chemistry classes. During her studies, she fell in love with the subject, as she found it a way to help her understand life and maybe someday change the world.

    While pursuing her degree in chemistry, she interned at Dow Corning where she was an integral member in the beauty care lab. It was here that Trondoli designed her very first product.

    She spent her days playing with raw materials, creating new formulas and testing out their performance on herself. After working as a chemist she transitioned into a consumer-oriented role, where she provided her technical support in regard to raw materials and formulations.

    After over six years at Dow Corning, Trondoli, joined the J&J team in 2016. She currently works on the face care segment with a main focus on Neutrogena and contributed to the brand’s Bright Boost collection, as reported in Happi. The new range is made up of four key rejuvenating products including: A Resurfacing Micro Polish, an Illuminating Serum, a Gel Cream, and a Facial Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF 30. The Neutrogena Bright Boost daily regimen can reveal brighter, wide-awake skin in just one week, according to the company.  

    Three of the products are powered by Neoglucosamine technology, a non-acid amino sugar exfoliant that helps boost surface cell turnover. Other ingredients driving the formulations are mandelic acid and glycolic acid to brighten skin.  Happi had the chance to interview Trondoll about the launch.
     
    Happi: How did this project come together for you and the other scientists?


    Trondoli: From an early age, math and science were my favorite subjects and I believe that led me to pursue a career in chemistry. As a senior scientist for Neutrogena in Brazil, I started to notice changes in my own skin as I approached my 30s and there was an opportunity to develop a line of products for millennial women with dull skin.  
     
    Happi: What does this line do for skin exactly?

    Trondoli: Along with three other millennial women across different time zones, we decided to create Bright Boost, a platform for all women whether you have dry or oily skin, or if you live in tropical Singapore or the California desert. This new line was formulated to help reveal brighter, more even looking skin and was created to meet the diverse needs of all skin types, even in different environments.
     
    Happi: How did you go about making the products?

    Trondoli: After a year of rounds and rounds of prototyping for each formula, communicating back-and-forth across different time zones, coming together in-person for three weeks and testing our creation for safety and efficacy – I was thrilled when the products finally came to life! 
     
    Happi: What is your favorite Bright Boost product and why?

    Trondoli: I’m especially proud of the product I helped create, the Bright Boost Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF 30. When I’m not in the lab, I enjoy surfing and being out in the sun so this moisturizer not only helps keep my skin stay smooth and restores dull skin with our Neoglucosamine technology, it also protects my skin from the Brazil heat—the UV rays are strong here.
     
    Happi: What’s next? Are there future plans for more skin care?

    Trondoli: Yes, for sure. When you work in research and development, it’s exciting to follow consumer trends and see new products come to market. I find myself asking the question, “What can Neutrogena come up with next to help people solve their real skin needs?” It’s also very special to see young women pursue careers in STEM. I definitely never thought I would see one of my own skin care products in stores one day. This is definitely just the beginning!
